We would like to thank you Estrellita B. Brodsky for the honor to host, on November 7th, at ANOTHER SPACE (New York) the past panel discussion about Uruguayan art, the first of this kind in New York. And all attended ready to listen and discover the work of two great artists form our beloved homeland. Although Luis Camnitzer and Marco Maggi have spent many years here in the United States, their practices remain connected in different ways to Uruguay, as some of you were able to hear from them in a moment.

Y todos asistieron listo para escuchar y descubrir la obra de dos grandes artistas formar nuestra amada tierra. Aunque Luis Camnitzer y Marco Maggi han pasado muchos años aquí en los Estados Unidos, sus prácticas permanecen conectados de diferentes maneras a Uruguay, como algunos de ustedes fueron capaces de escuchar de ellos en un momento.
As the international fair in Punta del Este, ESTE ARTE has worked for the last three years to promote a better understanding of the work of the artists of that region and to contribute to build a south American art system strong, healthy and resilient.
We had with us Claudia Calirman, that very generously agreed to be the intermediary, moderator and irritator! As an art historian, and Associate Professor at the John Jay College in New York, Claudia has studied, curated shows and published extensively about Latin American Art. As for example the beautiful show on Antonio Manuel at the Americas Society in 2011, or the book about Brazilian Art under Dictatorship published by Duke Press.
Luis Camnitzer was born in Germany in 37, was raised in Uruguay, and moved to New York in 64. Camnitzer’s work has been shown at major institutions since the ‘60s, has authored many publications and was the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowships, on two occasions. Retrospectives of his work have been presented, among others, at the Lehman College Art Gallery in the Bronx at the Kunsthalle Kiel in Germany, at the Daros Museum in Zurich and at El Museo del Barrio. The Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid will have a large-scale retrospective, in 2018.
Marco Maggi was born in Uruguay in 57 and moved to New York in 98. Sometime after that, Marco moved back to Uruguay, but after a couple of years he came back. His work has been shown in numerous major institutions including El Museo del Barrio, the Whitney Museum, and Tamayo Museum in Mexico and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has participated to numerous biennales and he was also the recipient of a Career Award at the Figari Museum in Montevideo.
ANOTHER SPACE is a program established by the Daniel and Estrellita B. Brodsky Family Foundation to broaden international awareness and appreciation of art from Latin America. Founded by art historian and collector Estrellita B. Brodsky, as part of the activities of the Daniel and Estrellita B. Brodsky Family Foundation, the program is dedicated to building recognition of modern and contemporary art to the region. ANOTHER SPACE facilitates substantial grants to museums, universities and other institutions to advance research and produce exhibitions and publications in the field of Latin American art and provides a forum for guest-curated exhibitions and educational programs. No part of the activities of ANOTHER SPACE inures to the benefit of any private individual.
