Director | Martín Castillo
Galería SUR was founded by Jorge Castillo and Martín Castillo in 1984 in Punta del Este. It is currently directed by Martín Castillo and has a modern space in La Barra. Since its inception it has been linked to the artistic and cultural environment of the Río de la Plata, helping to consolidate the identity of Uruguayan and River Plate art abroad. What is your ideal type of collector? From our point of view, an ideal collector is one who is passionate about the artist and values him deeply. Because even if the purchase of art is, very often, both a reflective and an impulsive act, it is above all else an act of passion for an artist or movement.
What, on the contrary, is the sort of collector you try to avoid at all cost? Those collectors who only see art as an investment fund, who don’t fall in love with the works they buy. However, sometimes someone who starts buying art only as an investment ends up connecting with their work and, consequently, ends up falling in love with the collection they built.
Who is the collector from whom you have learnt the most, and why? Artists are at the same time collectors. Thanks to them, in particular to Joaquín Torres García, is that we have a passionate interest in primitive arts. With their sensitivity they have brought us closer to a world where African, Pre-Columbian, popular and Brut art, among many others, mix.
What, if any, is the mistake you would never make again? Not having better documented the work of GALERÍA SUR over the last 30 years. What, if any, is the best deal you have ever made? The one we haven’t made yet, because we are always going to be making a better one.
