AGENDA

PRESS RELEASE

We are excited to present the 11th edition of ESTE ARTE, a platform that has transformed the cultural landscape in the region, creating a market that previously didn’t exist. ESTE ARTE stands out for its human-scale format and its focus on quality, marking a turning point in contemporary art in Uruguay. Our main goal is to promote a sustainable cultural ecosystem and advocate for best practices in the sector.

In 2025, ESTE ARTE offers an exceptional cultural program that includes talks with prominent figures such as Frances Morris, Meruro Washida, and Marcela Guerrero, who will share their valuable perspectives on contemporary art.

We will have the participation of internationally renowned galleries such as Aninat Galería (Santiago de Chile) with Catalina Swinburn, Black Gallery (Pueblo Garzón) with María Maggiori, Circa (Rosario) with Fabián Burgos, Del Infinito (Buenos Aires) with Esteban Pastorino, Galería del Paseo (Punta del Este, Lima) with Guillermo García Cruz, Galería Espacio O (Santiago de Chile) with Santiago Gutiérrez, Galería María Casado (Buenos Aires) with Federico Lanzi, Millán (São Paulo) with Tulio Pinto, OTTO Galería (Buenos Aires) with Daniel Stroomer aka Nase Pop, Galería SUR (Punta del Este) with Eduardo Cardozo, Galería Tarquinia (Viña del Mar) with Christian Jander, W—galería (Buenos Aires, Pueblo Garzón) with Gimena Macri, and Xippas (Paris, Geneva, Punta del Este) with Takis.

Each gallery presents a single artist, showcasing unpublished and never-before-seen works.

CULTURAL SUMMIT | GUEST CURATORS

Since its first edition, ESTE ARTE has been key in creating a dynamic and vibrant cultural ecosystem, promoting enriching conversations and a deep appreciation for contemporary art.

The ESTE ARTE Cultural Summit brings together curators, artists, and visionary cultural leaders at the forefront of contemporary art, offering debates that inspire and foster reflection. The invited curators, Frances Morris (Tate Modern), Marcela Guerrero (Whitney Museum of American Art), and Meruro Washida (Towada Art Center), who are visiting Uruguay for the first time, will deliver an exceptional lecture where they will share their cultural strategies and perspectives on artistic creation. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to review the portfolios of Uruguayan artists, whether represented by galleries or not. This initiative drives the development of culture and visual arts, creating a sustainable professional environment and enriching the life of our society.

FAIR | CURATORIAL VISION

Is it essential to experience these artworks in person, or can they simply be appreciated online? This is the key question that guides the curatorial vision of Director Laura Bardier.

INDIVIDUAL EXHIBITIONS In an exciting shift of the curatorial approach, each exhibitor will present exclusively one artist. This will allow for the display of a single artwork, an installation, or multiple pieces, as long as they all come from the same artist, thereby highlighting their uniqueness and creative voice.

FIRST VIEWS We are pleased to announce that all the artworks on display are completely new and will be presented for the first time. For artists who are actively producing, it is a requirement that the works have not been previously exhibited in any galleries, museums, or other venues, ensuring a fresh and unique experience for visitors.

HISTORICAL For artists who have passed away or are currently inactive, it is expected that their work holds historical significance, demonstrating a substantial impact on the development of a region, culture, or the art world in general. This will allow attendees to connect deeply with the artistic legacy.

PHYSICAL FORMAT It is essential that the projects address the question of how the works integrate into the current physical context. The works presented in physical format must align with their materiality, tangibility, physicality, perspective, and installation, creating a rich dialogue with the surrounding environment.

DIGITAL FORMAT Each gallery must have all its works available in digital format. Additionally, they will be assigned a scheduled time for presenting their proposals in the program, as well as a specific space equipped with digital visualization technology to facilitate detailed business meetings.

DEEP DIVE If the exhibiting artist is physically present, a guided tour of their booth will be organized during opening hours, providing attendees with a direct and personal experience. If the artist is unable to attend, a virtual tour of their studio will be arranged, ensuring that their vision remains accessible to all.

ICONIC The galleries have been selected based on proposals that are iconic and provocative, demonstrating both artistic quality and conceptual coherence. The influence and caliber of the artist or artwork will be evaluated based on its relevance in understanding the past, present, and future of artistic creation.

ROOTED Each project must reflect the artist's unique vision and their contribution to the world of contemporary art. Special value will be given to works that have been created with consideration of the context of the platform in Uruguay, emphasizing ESTE ARTE's commitment to local culture and its development.

ESTE /THEODORA AWARD for
Theodora AI and ESTE ARTE to Award $20,000 to an Artistic Work that Ethically Integrates Technology

"This is the first competition in the world to promote the ethical integration of artificial intelligence in art," says Sofía Arrigoni, partner and director of the tech firm.

The tech company Theodora AI, which specializes in detecting biases using artificial intelligence, has announced a partnership with Uruguay's leading art fair, ESTE ARTE. Together, they will award $20,000 to an artist who creates and presents an original work based on artificial intelligence that aligns with ethical principles. The competition, titled "Theodora Award: Ethical AI in Art," will be officially launched, along with its guidelines, between January 4 and 7 during the 11th edition of ESTE ARTE.

"This is the first competition in the world to promote the ethical integration of artificial intelligence in art. For Theodora, it is an honor to collaborate with one of the region's most important art fairs. This initiative pushes the boundaries of technology and ethics," comments Sofía Arrigoni, partner and director of Theodora AI. Arrigoni, a lawyer and executive overseeing the company's international expansion, adds that submissions will be open from January to May 2025, welcoming artists from around the globe.

María José Martabit, CEO of Theodora AI, further explains: "Just as we have addressed biases in other industries, it is equally important to promote the responsible use of AI in art. By combining art and technology, we unlock new possibilities for expression and participation, where innovation and conscious creation are key. The world needs more connections like this—where innovation, technology, and art come together to leave a meaningful impact," adds Martabit.

ESTE ARTE, recognized as a leading platform for the arts in South America, gathers gallerists, artists, collectors, and curators from around the world. Founded in 2015 by Laura Bardier, its current director, the fair attracts over 5,000 visitors each year in the Uruguayan resort town of José Ignacio, near Punta del Este. Since 2017, 100% of its exhibitors have achieved sales, with prices ranging from $500 to $2,500,000.

"ESTE ARTE has radically transformed the cultural scene in the region, creating a market that did not exist before. Today, it is an unmissable and exclusive cultural summit. We constantly work towards a more respectful and sustainable world. The Theodora Award aligns perfectly with our core values," acknowledges Bardier.

The Theodora Award's selection committee will include distinguished curators Barbara London, Frances Morris, and Victoria Noorthoorn.

The winning work will be exhibited during the 12th edition of ESTE ARTE in January 2026.

ESTE ARTIST

In addition to the lectures, the curators invited by ESTE ARTE will meet in individual sessions with Uruguayan artists selected through an open call, developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Visual Arts of the National Directorate of Culture.

Out of more than 150 artists presented, 75 artists were selected to participate in these sessions. This inclusive approach ensures that all artists, whether represented by galleries or not, have the opportunity to interact and receive direct feedback from these prominent art professionals.

This initiative not only promotes the development of culture and visual arts in Uruguay but also creates a sustainable professional environment that provides opportunities for the selected artists. By opening the doors to all artists, we are fostering a vital dialogue that strengthens the local art scene.
